If you're looking for Driving Tuition . . . .

Ask these questions . . .

How many passes do you have to your credit?
Many instructors attach a lot of importance to so called pass rates ( i.e. percentage of candidates presented for test having passed ).  There are many ways that this information can be misleading and it will vary after every test taken so cannot be relied upon.   A better measure of an instructor's performance is to look at the sheer numbers of successful candidates.  This can be verified by showing lists of names,
as on this site.

Will you smoke during my lesson?
Smoking breaks should always be at the request of the pupil.  Do not pay for the time an instructor spends smoking (in or out of the car).   We operate under a non-smoking policy in car. If a pupil wishes to smoke, they can stop to do this, outside the car.

Will I drive on my first lesson?
There are still some instructors around who will not allow pupils to actually drive the car on their first lesson.   If you don't drive . . .  Don't pay!
On the first 90 minute lesson with us there will be approximately 20 - 30 mins taken to explain the controls of the car etc.  After this  ALL pupils get to drive the car.

Can I book my test when I think I am ready?
Provided a pupil has passed their theory test they are at liberty to book their practical test.   It is recommended that guidance is taken from the instructor as to when this should be.  The instructor will book the test for you as part of the service we offer on payment of the DSA fee which is currently £48.50 (except Sats.)
For safety reasons, all instructors reserve the right not to provide their vehicle for test if the pupil has not reached a satisfactory standard.  Should this situation arise an instructor will inform the pupil before the last cancellation date of the test.
Tests
do not have to be taken in a driving school car.

Will the lesson fees go up before I pass my Test?
Once contracted to Jewel Control Driver Training, if you do not have a break of more than six months in your lessons, your fees will remain as at start, until you pass your test.

Will my instructor be fully qualified?
There are many well known organisations (including BSM) who may allocate a Trainee Instructor (PDI) to conduct your lessons.  This would be a person who has not yet passed the final (most important) exam in Instructional Techniques.
They are required to display a
PINK certificate in their windscreen and can normally only operate under this certificate for six months.
All fully qualified driving instructors (ADI) will display a
GREEN certificate in their windscreen.  Any person giving (paid for) tuition without either of these certificates is operating illegally.

Will I train in an up-to-date, easy to drive car?
To have the best chance of learning to drive quickly and therefore pass your test sooner, it is important that your training be carried out in a reasonably new vehicle.  A busy instructor may cover upwards of 50,000 miles in a year,  so a car over three years old is fast becoming a banger!
If you wouldn't buy it . . .  Don't pay to train in it!

How long will my lessons be if I live a distance from you?
Some instructors will say your lesson starts when they leave home . . .   This could mean a lot of time missing.   A lesson should start and end with you in the car, being trained "one to one".  No picking up the next pupil etc.   Don't stand for it!
